Let’s say a breast cancer patient came. Surgery was performed, what will happen next?
Patients always ask us what awaits them.
- How many days will I be in the hospital?
- What kind of treatments will I need?
- How long will the follow-up take?
After the operation, whatever additional treatment is required in the patient’s follow-up, the most appropriate treatments are applied according to the patient’s examination and pathological findings. Chemotherapy, hormonotherapy may be required. Radiotherapy will generally be required in limited surgeries. Sometimes smart medication will be required. These treatments may last a few months, may take 6 months, or 1 year like smart medicine. In addition, whatever treatment is applied, the first 3 years is the period when the disease is most likely to recur.
Depending on the patient’s condition, we would like to examine the patient once every 3-6 months for the first 3 years and every 6-12 months for the next 2 years. After 5 years, the probability of recurrence of the disease is very low. Therefore, after 5 years, 1 examination per year is sufficient. It is very important to explain these in detail to the patient before surgery.
The more information the patient has about the disease and the treatment, the easier we will to overcome cancer together.
