Why is otoplasty done?
Surgeons apply otoplasty to the auricle, the visible part of our outer ear. Also, the auricle comprises cartilage tissue and skin and is formed in the womb. The size, shape, or position of your ears affect your appearance. However, this procedure can remove any disfigurations.
Before the Procedure
Depending on the condition of the ear, the surgery may take 1-3 hours.
Local anesthesia with sedatives is more suitable for adults and older children. Moreover, surgeons often prefer general anesthesia for young children.
During otoplasty
According to the type of correction, surgeons determine the necessary surgical technique. They make incisions behind your ears or in the inner crease of your outer ear.
Next, they get rid of the excess skin and cartilage and fold the cartilage into the desired shape.
After the Procedure
After completing the procedure, surgeons bandage the ears for support and protection. At this stage, it’s natural to feel some itching or discomfort. If the prescribed medicine increases your discomfort, you should contact your doctor.
Never apply pressure to your ears after surgery. Be careful not to sleep on your side and not wear clothes you must wear over your head. Also, avoid scratching the incision areas.
After a few days from surgery, your bandages will come off. They give you a loose headband so you do not damage the surgery area while you sleep.
Lastly, your doctor will decide when you can shower or resume physical activity.
Types of Otoplasty
Ear enlargement
This surgery suits you if you want to increase your ears' size.
Ear pinning
If your ears protrude too far from your head, your surgeon can pin your auricles closer to your head with otoplasty.
Ear reduction
Your ears may be too large for your head. Many people suffering from this condition prefer otoplasty to reduce the size of their ears.
This surgery is suitable for anyone aged five or over and in good general health.
Results
The results of otoplasty are permanent. After your plastic surgeon removes your bandages, you will immediately see the changes in your ears.
