Hello, I’m Özgür Gürsu, MD. I am a cardiovascular surgery specialist.  Today, I will talk about varicose veins.

Varicose veins are widened and tortuous veins. It almost always occurs due to a defect in the valves of the vein. There may be varicose veins in every part of the body. But most often, we see varicose veins in the lower extremity, that is, the legs, as they are most exposed to gravity.

It is a genetic disease. It is more common in people who stand for a long time or work in jobs that require them to stand. Pregnancy speeds up the formation of varicose veins. Similarly, obesity is one of the factors that increase the risk of varicose veins.

Valves of the vein work one way. In other words, while allowing the blood to go up, the valves are closed so that it does not escape back. If there is a deficiency in the valves of the vein, that is, if the valves do not hold, backward blood flow will occur. In medicine, we call this reflux. Almost always the cause of varicose veins is the reflux I mentioned.

In venous diseases, the diagnosis is made by performing an examination called Doppler ultrasonography to determine the level of the defect in the vein valves. Doppler ultrasonography is a non-invasive examination performed in an outpatient clinic. The gel is applied to the leg and valves of the vein are checked with the help of an ultrasonography device.
